Best Time to Climb Mount Rinjani (Month by Month)
The best time to climb Mount Rinjani is the dry season, roughly April to December, with May to August offering the clearest summit views and most stable trail conditions. The mountain usually closes during the peak of the wet season.
Why season matters so much on Rinjani
This is a 3,726-meter volcano with exposed ridgelines and a summit climb on loose scree. In the wet season the trail turns to mud, clouds swallow the view you came for, and lightning on the rim is a real danger. Season is not a comfort preference on Rinjani, it is a safety factor. See our safety guide for why.
Month by month
- January–March: Wet season. The mountain is normally closed by the national park. Do not plan a trek here.
- April: Trails reopen. Green, fewer crowds, some lingering rain. A quiet, beautiful time if you accept a chance of cloud.
- May–June: Arguably the sweet spot. Dry, clear, warm days, and the landscape still green from the rains.
- July–August: Peak season. The clearest skies and best summit odds, but the busiest trails and coldest summit nights. Book early.
- September–October: Still dry and excellent, with golden savanna and fewer people than peak. Watch for occasional fire-risk restrictions in very dry years.
- November–December: The dry season winds down. Good early, wetter later. A gamble worth taking in early November.
Crowds vs conditions
If you want the best weather, go July or August. If you want the best balance of weather, scenery, and space on the trail, go May, June, or September. Peak-season summit mornings can have long lines on the final scree, which is one more reason to trek with a team that starts at the right hour.
The mountain can close without warning
Beyond the normal wet-season closure, Rinjani has closed for volcanic activity, earthquakes, and fire risk in recent years. Always check the current status and the eRinjani permit system before you lock in flights.
When you’ve picked your month
Once you know when, decide how long. A clear-weather window is wasted on a rushed route, so read how many days you need and compare Sembalun and Senaru. Peak-season dates fill fast, especially for the 4D3N Summit & Torean program.
