Sembalun vs Senaru: Which Rinjani Route Is Right for You?

Sembalun is the faster, more direct route to the Rinjani summit, crossing open savanna. Senaru is the greener, gentler approach through rainforest to the crater rim. The best programs use both, starting at Sembalun and finishing at Senaru.

Sembalun: the summit route

Starting from Sembalun village in the east, the trail crosses wide golden savanna before climbing to the crater rim at around 2,639 meters. From there, the summit push is shorter and more direct than from any other side. If reaching the top is your priority, you start at Sembalun. Senaru: the rainforest route

Starting from Senaru village in the north, the trail climbs through dense tropical forest to the Senaru crater rim at 2,641 meters. It is shadier, cooler, and does not reach the main summit directly, which makes it the classic choice for crater-rim trekkers and for the hidden Sangkareang second summit.

The traverse: the best of both

The strongest programs start at Sembalun, summit, drop to Segara Anak Lake, then climb out and finish down the Senaru forest, like the 4D3N Sembalun to Senaru. You see two completely different sides of the mountain and never retrace your steps.

And then there’s Torean

There is a third exit most trekkers never take: the wild Torean valley, full of waterfalls and caves. It is the most scenic descent on Rinjani and pairs with a Sembalun summit. Read about the Torean route before you decide.
