The Torean Route: Rinjani’s Most Scenic Descent

The Torean route is the wild, lesser-known way off Mount Rinjani, descending through a river valley of waterfalls, sacred caves, and dense jungle. Most trekkers come down the standard Senaru or Sembalun trails and never see it. The ones who take Torean almost always call it the best part.

Why Torean is different

Instead of retracing the open ridgelines, the Torean route drops you into a green, hidden valley on the mountain’s northern flank. You pass Goa Susu, a cave with layered limestone formations, cross rivers, and walk beneath waterfalls that appear without warning. The jungle thickens and the air turns warm and humid as you descend. It feels less like walking and more like discovery.

What you’ll see

  • Goa Susu and other sacred caves
  • Waterfalls and river crossings
  • Dense tropical rainforest
  • A side of Rinjani almost no one photographs

Who the Torean route suits

Torean is a descent, so it pairs with a Sembalun summit. It’s for trekkers who want scenery over speed and don’t mind a longer, more varied day. If that’s you, choose the 4D3N Summit & Torean or the ultimate 5D4N Dual Summit, which finishes through the valley after two summits.

Is it harder?

It’s not more technical, but it is a longer, more varied descent with river crossings, so sure footing and trekking poles help. For most reasonably fit trekkers it’s very doable, see how hard Rinjani is overall.

The ending Rinjani deserves

After the summit and the lake, the Torean valley is a soft, green farewell to the mountain, waterfalls and jungle, then the road and the world again. If you’re planning your trek, read how the routes compare and start with the complete guide.
