Segara Anak Lake & the Hot Springs of Rinjani
Segara Anak is the crater lake of Mount Rinjani, a crescent of turquoise water sitting 600 meters below the crater rim, with natural hot springs at its edge. For many trekkers, the night spent beside it, not the summit, is the highlight of the whole journey.
A lake inside a volcano
Segara Anak means “child of the sea,” named for its deep blue colour. It fills part of the enormous caldera left by an ancient eruption, and in the middle rises Gunung Baru Jari, a younger active cone that still steams. You are, quite literally, camping inside a living volcano.
The hot springs
At the lake’s edge, geothermal activity feeds a series of natural hot springs. After the long descent from the summit, sinking into hot water with the crater walls rising around you is exactly as good as it sounds. Locals also consider the springs healing. Bring sandals, see the packing list.
Which treks reach the lake
Not every program drops to Segara Anak. The 2-day summit attack doesn’t. If the lake and hot springs are on your must-see list, choose a program that includes them: 3D2N Summit, Lake & Hot Spring, the 4D3N traverse, or the 5D4N Dual Summit, which visits it twice. Compare in how many days you need.
Fishing, swimming, and quiet mornings
On slower programs you get a free morning at the lake to swim, fish, and return to the hot springs before climbing out. It’s the part of the trek where the mountain stops testing you and simply lets you enjoy it. That downtime is exactly why we recommend the longer programs for most people.
Part of the bigger picture
The lake is one chapter of what makes Rinjani extraordinary, alongside the summit at dawn and the Torean descent. See how they fit together in the complete Rinjani guide.
